The cough reflex is an important action, which the body undertakes to get rid of substances that irritate the Airways. The cough is usually started to erase an accumulation of phlegm in the trachea, from forced expulsion of air at high speed away from the body. You can choose to cough (a voluntary process), or our body can cough on their own (an involuntary process).
A cough can be of 2 types-acute and chronic. An acute cough is one that starts suddenly and is present for less than 3 weeks. May be infectious (common cold, sinus, pneumonia), or non-infectious (asthma, bronchitis). Chronic cough are present for more than 3 weeks. .
Some common causes of cough-
The cause of a cough usually relies on where it originates. However, the most common triggers of a cough include-
1) allergies or asthma, chronic bronchitis
2) Common upper respiratory tract infections, caused by secretions of the nose and paranasal sinuses draining in the throat, such as in cases of sinus infections, postnasal drip, chronic diseases of the external ear, throat infections
3) exposure to environmental pollutants such as cigarette smoke, dust, pollen, pet dander, chemicals industry.
4) smoke as exposure to second hand smoke.
5)-effects of some medications
6) Chronic accumulation of fluid in the lungs.
7) airway obstruction due to an object inhaled as food.
8) gastroesophageal reflux is also a very common cause of cough. This occurs when acid from the stomach to the esophagus travels up, resulting in production reflected a cough. This is often associated with a sensation of heartburn; and worsens throughout the day, or when one is located on the back.
Symptoms of cough-
Symptoms of a chronic cough may be difficult to assess because many causes of chronic cough are overlapping signs and symptoms. In fact, the annoying symptom is a cough that can have many causes.
However, some common symptoms include cough-
1) shortness of breath, cough with mucus pink, frothy – maybe the cause is fluid retention in the lungs
2) cough produces pale-yellow mucus due to a viral infection, as the cold
3) cough produces yellow or greenish mucus-because it can be chronic bronchitis or pneumonia.
4) if the cough is associated with wheezing and shortness of breath-reason might be asthma.
5) fever, chills, night sweats with chest pain when coughing-the cause may be tuberculosis
6) if the lung cancer or cancer of the air passages is present, one can cough up blood. Other symptoms that may point toward a cancer include increasing fatigue, loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss or decreased ability to swallow solid food or liquids.
Treatment-
Cough can be treated with cough medicines. Dry cough are treated with cough suppressants that reduce the urge to cough, while productive coughs (coughs that produce phlegm) are treated with expectorants that loosen mucus from the Airways.
Antihistamines and decongestants are a good choice for the treatment of cough associated with post nasal drip.
If some underlying disease is causing cough, first treatment should be based on treating the underlying disease.
A recent study indicates that, due to the presence of theobromine in chocolate, a tablet of chocolate can be an effective treatment for a persistent cough.
Gargle with warm salt water is very useful even by cutting the phlegm and reducing inflammation. Dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of table salt in 1/2 cup of warm water and gargle three or four hours.

Symptoms of cough usually subside on their own with 7-10 days. However, a lot of simple remedies are there that provide relief from the discomfort associated with it.
1) take three peppercorns and add a pinch of black cumin seeds and salt and consume it.
2) Drink warm milk with honey go to sleep for the relief of cough.
3) make a boiling decoction 50 grams of fresh ginger with 5 tablespoon sugar in 2 glasses of water for 30 minutes. Drinking hot, twice daily, on a day like this is very effective Home Remedy for coughs.
4) Mix powdered cinnamon, lemon juice and honey. Take two teaspoon twice daily.
5) into a cup of warm milk, add a pinch of turmeric (Haldi) powder and drink twice a day.
6) mix half a teaspoon of tulsi juice with half a teaspoon ginger juice. Add a teaspoon of honey. Take the mixture over 2-3 times per day. This is also useful Home Remedy for cough
7) prepare a mixture with the addition of 1/2 teaspoon of honey with lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon and take every 12 hours. Honey soothes itching to moisten the throat passage.
8-8) Mix 10 tbsp coconut milk with 1 tablespoon poppy seeds (powdered) and 1 tablespoon pure honey. Take this every night before going to bed. This remedy is a very good Home remedy for cough
9) Garlic-onion-chicken soup is a remedy for coughing. Take it to steaming hot, to give relief to irritation in the throat.
